CHRISTMAS CARDTOONS
In Decemeber 2023, Shed Thirty Six embraced the festive season with a studio project bringing a Christmas card to life. Our team crafted an enchanting animated sequence, revealed via a QR code inside each card, inviting recipients to scan the code to unveil a festive scene in motion.
Similar to the techniques employed in our previous creation, The Holiday Maker, this animated sequence seamlessly blended the charm of 2D animation with meticulously crafted miniature model sets. The result was not just a holiday card but an immersive experience that transcended traditional greetings.

HM: Fuelled by a personal interest in train design, engineering and model trains, the set for the Christmas card sequence was crafted at OO gauge, equivalent to a 1:76 scale.
I chose to showcase my personal expertise in model making by steering away from pre-made kits. Every detail of the set, designed with tangibility in mind, reflects my hands-on approach to model making. To achieve this, I delved into innovative techniques such as mold making and casting.

Finding inspiration in the timeless illustrations of artist C. Reginald Dalby, I curated a colour palette that echoed the charm and warmth of his work. This deliberate choice not only added visual richness but also created a nostalgic connection and fesitve spirit.

To bring the animated Christmas card to life, I developed a diverse cast of characters, populating the bustling station depicted in the sequence. Inspired by the myriad personalities encountered during countless train commutes, each character serves as a whimsical reflection of the rich tapestry of people that colour my daily journeys.

From the tired commuter to the obiedient west highland terrier, every character was thoughtfully designed to capture the essence of individuals I've crossed paths with on the rails. The station, therefore, became a microcosm of my own train adventures, a playful nod to the diverse range of people who share in the experience of rail travel.
